The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
