The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Perth.
He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but additional elements," he commented.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.
Backup Options
In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
