No fewer than thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
