A man who laced sweets with sedative and gave them to children at a summer program in the area has confessed to sexual crimes against two young males who were between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight youngsters and one adult fell ill at Stathern Lodge in the summer month.

The senior citizen, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, admitted guilt to a total of 17 charges when he was present at the judicial center on Friday.

However, he refused to admit a single sexual charge he was accused of, which was concerning a nine-year-old child.

Ruben was remanded in custody ahead of a additional proceeding on late November.

'Candy game'

The legal representative, presenting evidence, outlined the criminal behavior to the judicial body.

She said his those affected were under-privileged children who were staying at a summer camp which he operated.

The defendant played a "candy game" with the children, Mrs Prior said, in which he would go into the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and tell them to consume candy "as fast as possible".

She informed the proceedings Ruben had engaged in this activity with the children "over an extended period", and youngsters had earlier experienced illness the following morning.

She explained the man had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the minors being "overexcited from fun", until his stepchild had concerns in July 2025.

The legal representative continued: "This year his stepson had worries about what was going on, with valid cause.

"They chose" to examine in the man's possessions."

The prosecutor stated objects including lubricant, ointment and injection devices were located, and his family member notified the police about his concerns.

She stated the defendant continued to engage in the "candy game" with six children that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were everyone unwell the next day.

"The police had not arrived by that time," she added.

The oversight body, the police conduct office, previously told that it was reviewing law enforcement's management of the events.

Mrs Prior said the youngsters were unable to walk properly due to their sickness, so the family member contacted the police a second time.

She stated the man then conducted the "treat game" in a space of five minors.
