European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
