British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.
The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This action underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.
UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.
"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."
In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The UN reports Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
